Did you ever notice how there are so many experts on subjects in the media that don't really know what they are talking about? It may not have occurred to you, but this happens a lot to me.
The other day, I watched a TV show on Dish, that discussed the topic of Pride. (human pride)
I was captivated by the bravado of the writing and how open and frank the discussion was. I found the topic interesting for one reason, everyone in the world has pride. Of course, the most interesting fact was that generally there are two types of pride, good and bad.
The first kind of pride, called "healthy pride" is the type that moves us as a human toward healthy balanced self virtue, that is to say, a proper and balanced view of ourselves in the world. The second is hubristic pride. A pride that promotes ones self above all others and is ego centric.
Lawyers suffer from this second kind of pride as much as any other. We as a whole must guard in particular against the abuse of hubris in our profession. While no lawyer can truly operate as an effective lawyer without confidence, a goal of competent counsel should always be to balance healthy and unhealthy pride in our work in order to be the best in the profession. It is a tough balance.
This documentary was the exception to the rule of media, perhaps just like the rule of pride, there is good and bad, this one was on the right side. I learned a lesson though, and the next time, I want to be a prideful lawyer, I will do a quick check to be sure it is for the right reason.
