It seems like every day there is a news story that has some legal significance at the root.
For example the news of the shootings at Ft. Hood, and other places around the world always has us wondering about the legal outcome of such events. The sad truth is that no matter how hard we try to understand the mind of man, we cannot.
As for us here in Bailey, not long ago there was a shooting here at the local high school. Then as now, our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones. To echo the prose of many before, our hope is that they will not have died in vain. Perhaps we can learn from this in a legal sense however, because no matter how hard we try to relegate our moral ideals onto society, in the end, we all must rely on the good behavior of those around us, otherwise we will all live in fear.
This is the reason we have laws in our society. Because laws force people into doing those things out of fear of punishment that they should have done of their own conscience. As this goes, the less moral a nation becomes, the more law is needed to enforce good behavior. Perhaps this is why lawyers have always been an important part of the social dynamic.
